He said if Najib were to give more time before announcing the date of the general election, support for the BN could be further strengthened. "They (the opposition) said that after 55 years of the BN administration, it is time for a change. You should change for the better, but if the change is for something worse?" he told reporters during the Raya open house at his residence, near here, attended by about 10,000 people including the Prime Minister.
Currently, the opposition was spreading the sentiment of hatred among the people against the government as one of its tactics, said the former PM.He said the opposition's priority now was to instil the feelings of hatred against the government and including attacks made against himself who no longer held power.
"Why attack me as I have no power, it's as though there is this feeling of hatred against me, they live on such hatred," he said.He said how could anyone say that the government today had failed because the BN had managed to maintain the country's financial performance and racial harmony when the world was now facing economic crisis and ethnic problems.
"Why don't they (the opposition) mention this, because if they do, the people will certainly not hate the Government," he added.Meanwhile, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was also all praise for his successor Najib's leadership and implementation of various transformation programmes to take Malaysia to greater heights.
He said the initiation of various transformation programmes such as Government Transformation Programme, Economic Transformation Programme and Political Transformation Programme, were proof of Najib's commitment in developing the country."Najib is committed and works very hard. The people have seen and heard of his reforms and transformation policies for the country which benefit them. This is very good," he said at the Hari Raya open house at Dewan Sri Endon in Precinct 10.
Abdullah was accompanied by his wife, Tun Jeanne Abdullah. Also present at the open house were Najib, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and wife, Puan Sri Noorainee Abdul Rahman, and Melaka CM Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam. On who would contest the Kepala Batas seat currently held by Abdullah, he said the matter should be referred to the PM.
Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman said the Barisan Nasional (BN) government would continue to make it a priority to fulfill its promises to the people and attend to their problems. He said the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, was a clear example of this as he continuously meets the grassroots during walkabouts.
“The leaders of the country are confident in meeting the people face-to-face because they can fulfill the promises made to the rakyat. In this way, the people can air their problems directly so that the leaders can solve them immediately,” he said this when launching the Libaran Umno branch cluster meeting. Musa said it was different from the opposition leaders who often made empty promises because they could not honour them. He said they were more interested in getting the power to rule and not in defending the interests of the people as shown by what has happened in states controlled by the opposition.
Meanwhile, Musa who is also the Sabah Umno chief, reminded party members in the state not to be excessively concerned by the choice of candidates in the upcoming general election. He said they should focus all their efforts in updating the BN party machinery in order to ensure the people returned the mandate to the ruling government.
Furthermore, he said if they were caught up with the issue of candidates, they would not be able to focus on serving the people.“The choice of candidates in BN is determined by the leadership so let us all wait. What is important is for us to work harder to make sure the party remains strong and our party machinery is regularly updated.
“I believe the BN candidates who will be chosen are winnable candidates. So don’t think of personal interests but think of the party and serving the people,” he said.He reminded members to always stay united especially at the grassroots level and to avoid trivial issues that can destroy the party’s strength.
“If there are problems, we should solve them amicably bearing in mind that we must not destroy party unity by exaggerating small issues.Musa also stressed that Umno will be BN’s backbone and to work hard to assure the ruling government stayed in power in Sabah.
He said Umno and the component parties of BN will prove that BN is the best choice for the people through its continuous development programmes. Musa expressed his confidence that Sabah will continue to grow especially in the rural areas due to the commitment of the government led by Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
He said the BN government ensured development for all irrespective of their faith and political ideologies.“That is the BN concept of serving the people. The elected representatives of BN will always work hard to serve the people because they know they have been voted by the people and so it is their responsibility to serve them,” he added.
